The ECOWAS Commission has launched a website for the West African Market Information Systems Network (WAMIS-NET), to provide stakeholders with up-to-date and accurate information on the 400 rural and urban agricultural commodity markets in the region.
Speaking at the launching ceremony in Abuja, on Wednesday, 3rd July 2013, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Agriculture, Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Lapodini Marc Atouga said the Network will contribute to the promotion of food security, poverty reduction and facilitate intra-regional trade in agricultural products.
The Commissioner, represented by the Acting Director of Agriculture, Mr. Alain Sy Traore, said the Network seeks particularly to facilitate commercial decision-making by providing stakeholders with equal access to strategic information through effective data management and communication system.
The Commissioner urged stakeholders to ensure the success of the website through regular updates with current information.
In his speech, WAMIS-NET Coordinator, Mr. Salifou B. Diarra said the Market Information Systems have spread from six to 10 ECOWAS Member States - Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal and Togo.
He said the new website www.resimao.net, would assist in the monitoring of developments in the agricultural sector through collection and publication of relevant statistics and analytical reports.
Mr. Diarra expressed gratitude to partners, particularly the ECOWAS Commission, and the former and present Directors of the Commission’s Community Computer Center (CCC), Dr. Monisoye Afolabi and Mr. Osei Tutu Agyeman-Duah, respectively, for facilitating the successful establishment of the Network.
