Fight Against Hunger Gets Extra Boost from U.S.

Washington — The United States has surpassed President Obama’s 2009 pledge of $3.5 billion to advance agricultural development in low-income countries, say leaders of the U.S. Feed the Future program.

The $3.8 billion obligated for 2009 through 2012 has promoted “a lasting solution to hunger” through agricultural growth, improved nutrition, and conflict mitigation and good governance efforts needed to reduce poverty, said Tjada McKenna, an official with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the lead Feed the Future agency. McKenna testified November 28 before the Senate Subcommittee on International Development and Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs and International Environmental Protection.
