The Sahel countries, in particular Burkina Faso and Niger, have experienced in the last decade a significant development of extractive activities in agro-pastoral zones. This growth has created many jobs, formalized and secured an entire economic sector and actively contributes to the balance of the trade balance of the host countries. However, it can also be felt by riparian populations and temporary users of natural resources, particularly pastoralists, as a spoliation of their human rights especially in the absence of compensation for user rights.
In a context of chronic insecurity since 2012 in the pastoral zone in the Sahel, the Billital Maroobé Network, with the support of CARE Denmark, under the aegis of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights of the African Union and of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, wishes to establish a new regional framework of formal and sustainable multi-stakeholder dialogue between rural and industrial producers in order to defuse all risks of conflict through real protection, strict respect and fair reparation. human rights of agro-pastoralists.

The meeting was attended by the social responsibility officers of extractive industries companies and advisers supporting its development in the mining and oil sector; local authorities and producer organizations representing users of areas exploited by extractive industries; national, regional and international institutions in charge of monitoring the socio-environmental impact of businesses; researchers and NGOs working on the issue of adhering to the updated Guiding Principles for Multinational Enterprises in the OECD.
