ACUTE FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL INSECURITY IN WEST AFRICA: 7.1 million people affected

Food and nutrition insecurity is a concern for member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This explains the organization of a regional workshop to support West African countries to access the regional food security reserve to provide solutions to this crisis.

The Executive Director of the Regional Agency for Agriculture, Alfousseyni Salifou, announced yesterday that the population of (ECOWAS) is suffering from acute food and nutrition insecurity. "The analyzes of the food and nutritional situation estimate at 7.1 million the number of people in acute food and nutrition insecurity for the period March-May 2018. The Nigerian, who was speaking at a regional workshop launching the process of accompanying West African countries to access the regional food security reserve of the ECOWAS in Dakar, also warned the authorities of the sub-region of West Africa on a possible increase in this figure in the near future. "If food assistance measures are not taken, the number of people affected could reach 10.6 million during the lean season (June-August 2018)," he warns.
